Brian ‘Nov’ Seane, a Ga-Rankuwa native is a man of few words. Although tall in stature, his
height masks his quiet demeanour. As a graphic design recruit at the Umuzi academy, he
continuously challenges himself by pushing the boundaries in his chosen field. Post Umuzi he
plans to use his talent and acquired skills to create memorable work.
Fashion is her number one love. She refers to herself as a fashionate (Fashion Passionate)
being. A UJ multimedia student, she majored in videography, but one of her true goals is to be
the country’s next best art director. As a “divergent” in our society, she wants to be involved in
everything about advertising – from developing the conceptual idea to the executions. She
dreams of owning her own production house one day.
Hlasta, can sometimes come across as very serious, but once you get to know him you’ll
find that he’s a very down-to-earth and funny guy. An obsessive gamer, you can find him
crouched in front of a screen at all times – whether he’s playing Assassin’s Creed or
editing an Umuzi video we’ll never know.
Poppy Modisane is the only child raised by her mother. A fan of computer games and the speed of cars. From Mabeskraal in the North West, her creativity directed her towards videography at Umuzi. She is into all things arty and is planning on travelling in the near future. Besides being a jean and sneaker lover. She has a soft spot for animals. She loves web design and aspires to be an Film Director one day.
One of the most chilled people at the office, Papi is also one of the most outgoing. With
a zest for life, he enjoys travelling, music and sports. His first love is golf and he hopes to
merge his love of graphic design and golf to make a change in the world.
Pusha iPassion! Themba is the epitome of this Kasi expression. From Kagiso in the west of
Johannesburg, Themba is a self-taught graphic designer with an innate passion for drawing. He
wants to tap into the pool of South African youth development as a mentor. He believes that “if you
put your mind to something you will succeed.”
Nomathemba or ‘Norma the flow’ as she is known is a Durban-born web encoder, poet and artist.
She is currently a graphic design recruit at the Umuzi Academy. Her energetic personality is
welcoming and she is a multifaceted strong-willed individual. Post Umuzi she aims to use her
many talents to create game changing adverts.
A humble soul from Diepkloof who puts God first. Lutendo is conscious and driven by hunger and
fear of failure. He maneuvered from fine arts to graphic design followed by photography. The
opportunity to be at Umuzi is a step closer towards his dream of owning his own agency and being a
famous Art Director.
Tsholofelo is an independent and educated young lady with a strong sense of self. She has an
ambitious spirit that is innate and refuses to be measured by other people’s standards. Tsholo
knows that her hard work will one day pay off. With her head screwed on right, she hopes to one day
own a Media and Public Relations agency.
Chris Brown fan, Simangaliso Tshabalala, also known as Smash, is a
24-year-old Videographer who hails from Alexandra Township. He wants
to be remembered as the best Film Director and fashionista. He says,
‘boots make me feel superior, brave and confident’. He dreams of driving
the iconic Ford Mustang.
Soccer and basketball enthusiast, hip-hop fan and poetry lover. Do not be fooled by his straight
face and mysterious look, he is funny and loves to laugh. He believes in embracing the present
and traveling to foreign lands. His love for people resonates in how he treats others around him.
He dreams of owning his own Sports Marketing Company.
A 25- year old creative from KZN, Motshewa is passionate about woman empowerment issues and
says the discourse of feminism is what gets her going. This young lady is both diligent and committed
to the stream of her choice and describes copywriting as a “mind stretch.”
Born and raised in Limpopo, Cedrick is a Digital Management recruit at Umuzi and describes himself
as an individual who is passionate about the media and marketing industry. He is currently
completing his Diploma in Public Relations Management and hopes to one day become a Digital
Public Relations Officer
No partying, braai lover and church singer; Zweliziwe Ndhlovu is a proud “raised by granny” fellow
from Protea Glen. He is an Umuzi photography recruit who uses his lens to show the world his view.
Umuzi has given his career direction as being a tile layer was a job he really did not care much about.

Andile lives by the mantra inspired by his favourite song “Change the world” by RJ Benjamin. He wants to live forever just like Wolverine because he has a zest for life. His main passions are fashion, deep house music, animation and photography. Starting a graphic designing studio and a fashion brand called Nouteave Creations has been his greatest achievement thus far.
Born in the South of Joburg, Janet is a passionate singer/songwriter who weaves words effortlessly. Her first love is music and she wants to one day be an author. Her favourite colour, red, reflects her deep emotional qualities. As a perfectionist, Janet is always looking to improve herself.
Iris is a lady that wakes up with gratitude and is also an undercover introvert. She is an all-round artist drawing and painting her life with a book underway. She was part of the Creative Council where her love for advertising started. She had her own exhibition and is working towards being a part of the advertising industry.
A pure daddy’s girl at heart, Grace Phumelele Zwane is an Umuzi copywriting recruit. Johannesburg theatres become her recital pulpit as a soulful African Queen Poetess in the evenings. Her dreadlocks are her roots and vows never to shave. For her they represent her strength, courage and wisdom.
Mogau, Muse, is a young, chocolate loving, creative from Ivory Park. She believes ‘’it is better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all’’. This published writer has an article in People Magazine title ‘My story, living with Alopecia’. Her short story, The Coinage Book One, is due to be published in December.
Thato is a realist at heart. He couldn’t care less about fashion. He is close to his family and friends. Creativity keeps him going and Dirk Dzimirsky inspires his art of drawing and painting which lead him to doing graphic design. He is at Umuzi hoping to apply those skills that will help him open his own animation studio.
Puso AKA Shadow is an outspoken, African spiritualist and very conscious guy who has a hunger for knowledge. He is a creative entrepreneur chasing that money. Umuzi has given him the platform to expand his Juwish Brands into something amazing. He has learned to adapt to his surroundings easily because of having to stay in different places when he was a child.
Nosy is a calm with a perky edge type of lady who sometimes is misunderstood. She values home tremendously. She bagged a scholarship in graphic design and topped that by graduating with a BA in political Science. She has a sense of adventure and lives by the scripture Ecclesiastes 9:10 daily. She is hoping Umuzi will bring her closer towards fulfilling her dreams.
An avid lover of discovering new things, graphic designer and founder of apparel label Shocked Ape, Tshidiso is a juxtaposition of sorts. He is generally a chilled and laid-back guy, but his work speaks volumes to the person he truly is – loud and in control. Open to the unfamiliar, Fab T as he is known amongst his friends, definitely pushes the envelope towards exceptional.
Sifiso is a multi-media and production City varsity Graduate. This graphic designer is perceived as being a bit looney owing to his regular clown antics. Sifiso is simply a religious kasi young man with a zest for life. He hopes to make a success of his freelancing career with the knowledge he acquires from Umuzi.
Thobi is a Multimedia graduate who has a deep affection for creativity, it makes her world go ‘round. She is a Jozi girl, who loves her meat and is anti-veggies. According to Thobi ‘’Input is always (=) equal to output’’. She is a super Superhero fan, DC all the way. Superman in particular is her favourite hero.
Zandy (aka Miss Smiles) is a bike loving Marketing Management graduate from springs. ‘’Why fail if you can succeed?’’ she asks. Her advice to fellow peeps out there is ‘’Believe in you’’… Zandy doesn’t like the sound of whistling, especially whistling in the house. She loves ice, just cold frosty-frozen ice… But Miss Smiles isn’t at all a cold person.
Born in Mafikeng, Remofiloe describes herself as an observer with a love for all things black in colour. Her fashion brand, Lion Spirit is one of her greatest achievements. Passionate about reading, helping people and fashion, Remofiloe hopes to one day use her digital marketing knowledge to build a fashion empire that will enable people to grow.
“Joy can exist even in the midst of sorrow,” Says Njabulo. His name represents, “joy” and best describes him. The Umuzi copywriter recruit with a B.Ed. and a BA honours in applied drama is a singer with a love for words. He leans towards creative non-fiction and has hopes to become a popular name in advertising.
An eclectic and self-propelled young woman with itchy feet, Abigail Zikhali is an Umuzi Academy photography recruit who’s like dynamite waiting to explode. Rooted in Mthunzini, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Abigail is working towards a career in cinematography, traveling South Africa and eventually, the continent. Big dreams, fitting for a woman with a big afro.
“I laugh a lot”, she says. She is an extrovert, very humorous and occasionally sarcastic, but not to offend or mock anyone. “When I see something I don’t shoot it immediately, I see it, memorise it, keep it in my head and take it at a later stage in my own twisted fantasy imagery” she says. She wants to be a backpack photographer, travel the world and write a book.
Cas is a reserved, easy-going person who is never short of laughs, but is sometimes mistaken for being unapproachable. She is family oriented and takes culture seriously. She is interested in styling and fashion buying and has a diploma in Marketing Management. Her future plans are to use her digital marketing knowledge to make her mark at a magazine or fashion house.
Inspired by the 3 W’s of life, Women, Words and Winter, Gomz is a passionate writer. The art of making words dance, telling stories and influencing others through her writing is what she loves. She hopes to bring this passion to life in a career as a writer, copywriter and author.
Karen could not imagine her life without the ability to draw her heart out. “If I’m not drawing, I’m drawing.” Fantasy creatures and cartoons are her inspiration, and she loves to make her own fantasy come to life through drawings and design. Karen aims to build her personal brand and become a successful graphic designer.
Quiet and reserved platypus lover, Katlego Mashapu, is an arts lover who had a dream of being a cartoonist or animator and found himself in graphic design. He loves the outdoors and dreams of off-road adventures. Katlego always strives to be the best and takes creative risks to make his dreams and goals a reality.
Kelebogile also known as “Kele” went from being an electrical engineering student to a radio presenter and now a copywriting intern at Umuzi, She says, “Media chose me.” She’s a music lover with an infectious laugh and has plenty of jokes to share. ‘Kele’ is happy that she can finally follow her passion for writing.

Neto is a self-taught photographer with huge talent. He loves telling real life stories through his lens. Neto’s work in the Bree taxi rank has gained public recognition and he was recently acknowledged by ETV as an new image shaper and upcoming photographer to be watched. He hopes to capture hopeful images of South Africa and portray moments we don’t talk about.
“I enjoy giving more than taking, why not?” he says. Having experienced both life’s divisions, disadvantaged and advantaged, he has learnt to be as kind and giving, just as he was taught by his mother. He would like to turn his photography into more than just visuals – and create inspiring storytelling documentaries.
Lerato exudes warmth and has an unusual love for mountain biking, which comes second to her daughter. She is gentle and tactful, yet fierce. Her drive and inspiration is contagious. She has a graphic design qualification and her aspirations involve being one of the best creative directors in the advertising industry.
Lindo has always had a unique eye for images, which made him feel “weird” at school. At Umuzi he has found a place where his way of thinking is encouraged and understood. His love for photography was inspired by the way a photo can capture a moment forever and lives on to tell the story. He also loves poetry, motivational reading and capturing life with his lens.
Meet Lungelo Msibi, formerly known as Ace, now known as “Linkkin for short.” He’s an introvert dressed as an extrovert and a man of many words. His gift of the gab has translated to his love of drama and poetry. Inspired by people, music and his fellow poets, his love of the arts resonates throughout every conversation.
“FatBoy Steeze” as he is known, can be loud and very funny. His personality is largely emphasized through his dress code – colourful, funky, weirdly different and smart. Although he is a photography intern at Umuzi, he’s fascinated with the Ad industry and would like to be an art director. Apart from taking photos “Steeze” is also crazy about cycling and his Nike sneakers. He says, “My purpose is to make people smile.”
Staunch “Family Guy” follower, Ndumiso, is far from twisted and politically incorrect. Raised in the East Rand, Ndumiso lives by the mantra “impossible is nothing”. He’s a UJ social sciences graduate, and has learnt that no work experience is wasted on an eager learner. Ndumiso is also an avid keyboard and aspiring guitar player. He’s a master of the art of networking, and hopes his time as an Umuzi intern will empower him, so he can do the same for others.
Affectionately known as “Hippo” because of his larger than life personality, Hippo is a self-taught photographer from the East Rand. He loves photography because it allows him to have hard copies of moments and turn them into memories. He describes his charm and says “There’s no room where I can walk in and not leave without people knowing who I am.”
Noma’s ability to chase her dreams and working hard, is what makes her special. She is driven by her passion for writing. She says, “God entrusted me with the gift of words and the life of his very own angel, my daughter”. She also loves music and is taking guitar lessons.
Crazy and a self-confessed functional coffee addict, Olebogeng is also obsessed with collecting drumsticks. Yes, she’s a drummer who specialises in soft rock. Like most creatives this multi-talented young woman is unsure about her ideal job, but she dreams of being a director of her own creative.
Oz calls himself an entrepreneur because he always found ways to make money, and have fun at the same time. When he got his first camera, he discovered a passion for telling people’s stories. He believes these stories can lead to a better life for everyone and that photography can change the world.
Puleng was first nick-named Keally, and knows herself by both. She has an interest in studying peoples’ behavioural patterns, and earned a degree in English and communication. She won R100 for her first poetry competition. Puleng has a desire to make her mark as an all-round writer. She is a lover of all things beautiful, creative and arty.
“I’m a quiet guy. What you see is what you get.” A graphic designer by profession, but photographer and hip hop head by fate. He fuses his love of the arts and music by curating an online magazine about South African hip hop expression. He dreams of one day becoming a world class Art Director.
Having studied advertising, Siboniso is excited to finally begin his journey in the creative industry. He realises the challenge of juggling his passion and responsibility as a single dad, but he’s ready to offer the world his raw talent. He loves that through Umuzi he finally gets do something he’s passionate about and follow his dream of becoming a photographer.
“I am very organised and neat”, he says. He has a cool sense of humour, making him good fun to be around. He is passion driven to make the best of himself as a writer, photographer and fashion lover. “My uncle is a chief, but I want to pave my own way to create change that no one ever saw coming”.
Born in Dube Village, Soweto, Sithembiso Kubeka is a hardworking individual who always strives to be better than he was the day before. ‘Sthe’, as his colleagues affectionately know him, is an opinionated and fired up individual who allows other people to feed off his energy. He believes that Digital Community Management was made for him.
SK is a real creative self-starter. SK learnt the ropes of graphic design by himself, with the help of textbooks, PDFs, YouTube tutorial videos and mentorship from people within the industry. SK is passionate about helping others and creativity through collaboration. He has ambitions of owning his own film production company.
He isn’t just the life of the party. He is the party. A very smart guy, Tiro is the epitome of cool, calm and collected. All you need to do is drop Tiro a beat and see this self-proclaimed “cool cat” come alive. He loves putting this passion and energy into his graphic design work and turning any situation into a positive experience.
Known as Lando/Zaza to close family and friends, former PR student Tshepiso believes that she is still finding herself as a graphic designer. She is a self-taught designer who is embracing a new found freedom in her African skin with a love for learning and helping children.
“Vee”, as she would like to be called, is a super introvert and likes distancing herself, but she never lets her opinion go unheard. She says music is her refuge. She is a fitness freak, an adoring dog lover and a fan of crime thrillers. She is excited about taking her love for art and design and creating a new career with her number one passion.
Known as ‘’radio guy’’ because of his soft, muscular voice, Vuyani is also an aspiring photographer and a writer of poetry. He reads avidly and enjoys keeping up with fashion blogs. His dream is to own a restaurant and to use his digital marketing skills and creative thinking to make it a success.
“I want to be my own boss and run my own businesses”, says Ma-Vuvu(as Vuyiswa is known). She already has a flower business. She wants to gain digital marketing skills to develop herself as an entrepreneur. This arts and culture devotee, food lover and jazz enthusiast is a very curious and friendly person who likes everyone to feel included. It is her long-term goal to have her own Events company.
Zuleka has as many nicknames as she does facial expressions. Her bold personality makes conversations interesting and she can have a full conversation with her animated expressions alone. She’s done a 3-month copywriting course at AAA and loves learning new things. She’s always been quite shy, but since she moved to Johannesburg, she isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
