Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA)

The purpose of this page is to explain how Umuzi collects, uses, stores, shares, updates, protects,

and otherwise processes personal information. This page also outlines the rights individuals have

regarding their personal information and how applicable privacy legislation protects those rights.

Understanding PAIA

Section 32 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa provides that:

"Everyone has a right of access to any information held by the state and any information held by

another person that is required for the exercise or protection of any rights."

The Promotion of Access to Information Act, No. 2 of 2000 (PAIA) gives effect to this constitutional right. It

establishes mechanisms through which members of the public may request access to information held

by public and private bodies.

PAIA came into operation on 9 March 2001.

In accordance with PAIA, Umuzi recognises individuals' right to request access to information and is

committed to responding to such requests in a lawful, transparent, and timely manner.

PAIA aims to:

  • Promote transparency, accountability, and effective governance;
  • Encourage openness within public and private bodies;
  • Enable individuals to exercise and protect their rights;
  • Support informed participation in decision-making processes;
  • Foster a culture of human rights and social justice; and
  • Establish practical mechanisms through which information can be accessed in a speedy, affordable,
  • and effective manner.
