What is a Green Business

At Umuzi, we use "green business" to mean any business that operates in a way that reduces its impact on the environment and society while remaining economically viable. In practice, that means minimising waste, conserving energy and resources, and running ethically across the entire operation: from what the business makes and how it makes it, to how it treats the people and communities it works with, and how it uses the natural world it depends on.

The GreenLAB is built for green businesses across the sectors South Africa's future depends on, including:

  • Renewable energy and clean technology: solar, wind, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, low-emission delivery
  • Sustainable agriculture and food: organic farming, sustainable fishing, plant-based foods, food waste reduction, urban farming
  • Green building and construction: eco-friendly materials, green architecture, retrofitting and insulation
  • Sustainable fashion and textiles: ethical brands, second hand and thrift, textile recycling, community projects using local materials
  • Waste management and the circular economy: recycling, upcycling, zero-waste products, income generation from waste
  • Ecotourism and sustainable travel: eco-lodges, green tour operators
  • Sustainability services: consulting, green finance, eco-friendly marketing
  • Eco-friendly personal and home goods: natural beauty, green cleaning, sustainable furniture

Who It's For.

The GreenLAB is for young South African green entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35, from anywhere in the country, who are already doing the work of the green economy and are ready to take their business to the next level.

Whether the business is still an idea taking shape, a prototype, or a running operation with paying customers, the programme is calibrated for where you actually are. Women-owned and black-owned green SMMEs are actively prioritised.

All you need to apply is a green business you are already working on, a plan or intention to create employment as it grows, and the drive to make it happen.

How it works

The GreenLAB is structured around four progressive blocks. Every stage unlocks new support, and the further you go, the more you access.

Block 1: Build Your Foundation

Open to 3,000 businesses

  • Start with 24 free, self-paced micro-courses covering green business fundamentals, financial literacy, digital skills, AI for business owners, marketing and accessing markets. Accessible from anywhere in South Africa, at no cost to you.
  • You will also get access to an always-on AI business coaching platform that scores your readiness and gives you tools to grow, plus a completion reward pack worth R600: a data bundle, an equipment voucher and a certificate recognising what you have achieved.

Block 2: Develop your pitch

Selected: 900 businesses

  • High-touch, intensive support to build your business case. Includes a design thinking sprint to sharpen your solutions, an introduction to forecasting and pitching, and a full pitch toolkit with digital templates, video submission tools and submission support.

Block 3: Pitch to investors

  • Present live, in person or virtually, to a panel of senior industry leaders, mentors and funders. Quarterly Dragons' Den-style pitch events for green businesses put you in front of Umuzi staff, subject matter experts, GreenLAB Collective partners and external industry panellists. Five hundred businesses receive dedicated mentors from pitch readiness through to post-funding growth.

Block 4: Unlock Funding

Selected: 250 high-growth businesses

Up to $5 000 (USD) in outcomes-based microfinance per green SMME, disbursed across three tranches as you hit milestones. Advanced courses unlock your first tranche, and verified business growth unlocks the rest. The total pool will be split across 250 businesses.

  • Business support services from a pool of support including digital services, e-commerce, AI tools, admin, project management, research and sales support.
