"When I joined the Experience Lab (XPL) programme, my goal was to upskill and also to be part of a community of like-minded people. I expected it to help me grow professionally, but I got so much more out of it."

Clement, a former Experience Lab participant at Umuzi, shares his experience on this pathway that is supported by the IDC and Presidential Youth Employment Initiative. It was designed to give young people practical experience while preparing them for the realities of the workplace. For Clement, the combination of technical learning and personal development made a lasting impact.

“What really stood out to me was how well-rounded the programme was. There were technical parts of the course, but also mental health sessions, safe spaces where we could share our aspirations and even the Wealth Way course that taught us financial management. Those experiences reminded me that personal growth and professional growth go hand in hand, which made the journey even more rewarding.

The programme gave me confidence, support and a sense of belonging. I got to learn, but I also got to connect with peers and facilitators who genuinely cared about our progress. Now, as I look back, I realise how important those small things were, whether it was sharing tips for managing stress or having open discussions about our dreams and challenges.”

Experience Lab has modules that do not assume knowledge and ensure that all learning speaks to core pillars in work readiness, while building a portfolio of readiness. Umuzi made some big and brave decisions with this pathway that we share in our Impact Report.

Today, Clement has taken the next step in his career as an Associate Media Specialist at Rival, applying the lessons and confidence he gained through the programme.

“I know there’s a lot to learn, but I feel prepared because of the foundation I built through the XPL programme. It gave me not only practical skills but also the confidence and adaptability to step into new spaces and keep growing."

Clement's journey is one of thousands made possible through the Experience Lab. In 2025, the programme enabled 2,368 young people to access meaningful work experience opportunities and unlocked 3,404 earning opportunities. His story is a reminder that when young people are given the opportunity to gain experience, build confidence, and belong to a supportive community, they are better prepared to step into meaningful careers.

The full story of this work, the progress, the lessons, and what's still being built , lives in our 2025 Impact Report. Read it here.
