Embracing the Future of Tech: Insights from the BBD Escape Conference By Dikson Manganye & Nomfundo Mlangeni

Attending the BBD Escape Conference was a transformative experience that left a profound impact on me. It was a day filled with opportunities to network, learn, and grow within a community of innovative thinkers. The conference embodied the true essence of "escape"—allowing us to momentarily break free from routine and immerse ourselves in creativity, collaboration, and learning. The event started on an impressive note, with a showcase of innovative games, each developed within just two weeks by incredibly talented teams. The level of creativity and execution was remarkable, setting the tone for the rest of the day.

Throughout the conference, I attended sessions led by experts who were not only knowledgeable but also deeply passionate about their fields. These sessions offered insights that expanded my understanding of current trends in the tech industry, leaving me inspired. One of the most memorable moments was the panel discussion on "The Changing Role of the Conventional Software Professional." The discussion featured industry leaders who explored how technology is evolving and how software professionals must adapt.

It was an eye-opening conversation that left me with fresh perspectives on my role in the future of tech.  I particularly loved how a panelist described their university's approach of having final-year students work on real-life projects for organizations as part of their assessments. I believe this is something every university should adopt and integrate into their curriculum to help students transition smoothly from school to the world of work.

One of the most surprising things I learned was that my own thoughts are not entirely my own but are often shaped by external influences, especially regarding certain topics.

I had the privilege of joining three insightful sessions. The first, titled "It’s Not CSS, It’s You," humorously tackled common challenges in web development, reminding us that sometimes the issues we face are due to our own approach. The cybersecurity session was equally valuable, offering practical strategies to safeguard sensitive information in an increasingly digital world. The final session that stood out to me was Stefan De Jager's "How I Built a Handwriting Robot" talk. It was a powerful reminder of how much can be achieved through technology. This talk really sparked the creative and innovative side of my brain.

One minor challenge of the event was deciding which talks to attend, as many fascinating sessions were scheduled at the same time. The only improvement I would suggest is more time to fully engage with all the sessions. It was difficult to choose, but after attending my selected talks, I found each one to be worthwhile! I also came to realize that while the field can seem tough and overwhelming, it's equally exciting and enjoyable.

The conference exceeded my expectations. It not only broadened my knowledge but also provided a space to ask questions and gain new perspectives. The experience felt brief but incredibly enriching, and I left feeling more inspired and equipped to contribute to the future of technology.
