Tackling the gender gap in technical spaces one dialogue at a time

Last week Friday saw the continuation of an exceptionally inspiring and divine shift happening in the world of work: WOMEN IN TECH. We spent the afternoon creating space for game-changing women in tech  to reflect on their journeys and share some golden nuggets of wisdom for our growing community and emphasise the importance of young women taking up space in whatever field they find themselves in.

“The perceptions that society has on women in tech’s capabilities still need to be addressed. We are trailblazers in this space and we need to start making it more visible”

-Katekani Nyamandi, Web Development Learner at Umuzi

In today's fast-paced and ever-growing tech landscape, the need for diversity and inclusivity has become more critical than ever. The gender gap in the tech sector has been and continues to be a serious issue and this is backed by some stats below which are a cause for concern:

28% - The percentage of the number of women in tech leadership positions (2023 stat)

26.7% - The percentage of the number of women occupying tech-related roles

These numbers highlight an important need for more role models for younger women to look up to and aspire to in the tech space.

The goal is to not only advocate for gender equality in tech but to encourage women to join the industry by challenging the stereotypes and barriers that exist for women in tech from the grassroots level at our educational institutions...

“Developing the baseline technical skills that you need is crucial but the most important thing is staying up to date with industry and tracking the advancements in technology in order to position yourself in the world of tech effectively.”

-Lyndi Lawson-Smith, Umuzi CEO

The truth of the matter is that tech is for everyone! An increase in mentorship programmes and networking engagement for women in tech is a great place to start in breaking down these barriers and stereotypes. These initiatives encourage guidance and provide a roadmap to success, which provides clarity and confidence for women to pursue successful careers in the tech space.

“We understand the importance of a network. We underestimate the power of having someone to look at to lead as you try and navigate a space unknown to you or your community.”

- Adi Tobias, Former Head of Customer Experience Uber Sub-Saharan Africa

Here are a few takeaways/call-to-actions from us in contributing to addressing the gender gap :

  • The technology industry should actively seek to inform students about technology and how it’s shaping the world we live in to encourage women to participate in this

  • Industry should continue to increase access to technology careers

  • Successful energies should avail themselves as mentors and role models for women to inspire upcoming generations to participate in the industry

  • Industry should commission programmes and mentorshis to help women to reach their full potential in their fields

By addressing the above, we can break down the barriers and stereotypes that exist to foster a thriving and inclusive tech landscape which involves women and their contribution to the impact it has on society.
