2022 was our first full-year post COVID-19, and it’s safe to say that it was a lot! It had its fair share of ups and down, but we made man! Give yourself a round of applause, you deserve it. One thing to love about our community is we don’t throw in towels even when the odds looked as if they were against you.
Lady May kicked off with 21 new recruits joining our Umuzi community. What a fire group of individuals they are!? We’re super excited to have our C35s onboard.
We also saw our C30s head off to work experience with 2U, Purple Cosmos, TIH and VMLR&Y respectively. Another milestone in the books to note is our C28s who received job offers post their work experience.

At Umuzi, we believe that curiosity is King!
The Curiosity Awards is your opportunity to come up with a cool idea, design & build a digital product which you feel solves a unique curious problem. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do it alone, you’ll get to join a team of 3 to 5 competitors from across the various career tracks with a similar curious interest. Your team will be cross-functional, a nice balance of different skills and interests and can contain more than one alumni member. Yes, you read that correctly, the competition is also open to alumni!
What can be built?
The idea is that you should design and build something that:
Inspires curiosity - your curiosity as well as the curiosity of current and future learners
Adds value - makes the world better, not worse
Functional - the code runs and has the intended effect
Designed - consider how some would interact and visually engage with the product
That’s about it! Our previous competitors have built a whole bunch of different digital products such as chatbots, online games, charity web apps, chess tournament management systems and all sorts of other exciting things.

Our Umuzi team has gained some new & not so new faces. Meet Anthony Selley , new to the community, joined the tech department as a Tech Ed Team Leader. Our not so new to Umuzi faces are Ngoako Ramokgopa from C22 & Themba Ntuli from C28. They joined the tech team as junior Web Developers.
A big shout to Carrie Netshifhire & Hloniphile Mdluli for winning the GIC iX Chairman's Choice award for the February 2022 intake.
The GIC iX online programme is an opportunity to validate ideas and learn about entrepreneurship online with the support of Stanford University Online. These two great minds had to pitch a business idea, to which Hayani was born – an online platform that provides on-demand design services to empower South African start-ups and businesses. They match the start-ups design tasks with the best hand-picked designers with daily progress updates.
They competed against several other teams from around the world and were surprised when they were announced as the winners. We aren’t surprised, though, these are the fruits of practising what you preach! This makes Carrie and Hloniphile our May legends at this point! Well done guys for making us proud.
This month’s throwback is a snip off of “Ask sis Dolly” aka “Ask a Man“. You’ll watch strangers give advice to people’s secrets. Given the chance to bear it all, would you tell your secrets? Are you real enough?

It’s safe to say, April is definitely no fool. I doubt anyone at Umuzi will forget April 2022. The month that ordered us to rest! And rest we did, but our recruits made sure to throw in a kick or two.
This month kicked off with 19 new recruits joining Umuzi. This also happens to be our 34th cohort. April also marked the end of the journey for our C28 recruits. They have completed work experience with their respective employer partners. It’s a whole new & exciting world out there.

Meet our first Java recruits to join our employer partner Discovery on work experience. Thapelo Masangane, Khethukuthula Mkhize, Mojalefa Mohlamonyane and Berned Ndebe all from cohort 26. They basically get to set the standard for many more Java recruits to come. We have no doubt that they are doing an impeccable job representing and impressing. It’s crazy how time flies when you're occupied in your own lane and making major strides while you're at it. That’s what our Umuzi community has been up to. October has come & gone, but we caught enough of her to fill you in on how good we have had it.
